Coral Leisure secures over €109,000 in Swimming Pool Grants with Coral Askeaton receiving €14,300
Sport Ireland and Ireland Active this week announced that 8 Coral Leisure centres nationwide have been allocated a total of €109,199 in Covid recovery grants. These grants are specifically for swimming pool operators in recognition of the importance of the sector and the impact swimming has on the nation’s health. Minister of State for Sport and the Gaeltacht Jack Chambers TD speaking this week said “Swimming Pool operators demonstrated their resilience throughout the pandemic. It is important that this resilience continues. The funding announced today will assist swimming pool operators to continue getting communities across the country active and providing a real-life skill. This has never been more important and is essential for our physical and mental wellbeing.” Coral Leisure centre swimming pools provide a vital resource for schools, clubs and communities across the country, and it is important that this infrastructure is maintained going forward. This investment will help Coral Leisure to continue to provide a safe and essential service which is vital to sustain swimming and maintain high physical activity levels in our local communities These grants are the result of weeks of hard work by the Coral Leisure Management and Energy Champions in each centre gathering the relevant data and submitting applications.

The Balanced Life – Sunnie Gadbury There’s a reason I chose this topic – I’m an average Joe, the everyday man – and as a coach I practice what I preach. If you’re looking for someone to help you perform better with your chosen sport or compete in body building competitions, I’ll find you help. If you’re looking to improve how you look and feel while still enjoying the niceties of life, I’ll help you myself. I’m a strong believer that you can eat what you love, drink what you love and live a lifestyle that brings you joy and adventure and still love the reflection in the mirror. How? Just live ‘The Balanced life’. I don’t shy away from the likes of pizzas, Chinese take away, chocolate, definitely no stranger to a pint of Guinness! I just apply the following steps to my life schedule to allow myself enjoy the ‘things that are bad for you’; My advice – if it brings you joy it’s not bad for you, if you start to enjoy it less it’s no longer good for you. Weekdays – Career Mode I try to keep my weekday’s body and bank orientated; work hard to improve my career and better myself physically and mentally every day. Working regular shift patterns Monday to Friday helps keep my days consistent with an easy to follow structure, one which helps me tick the following boxes: Work related jobs – daily responsibilities, pt sessions etc. Nutrition Exercise Rest & unwind Sleep I aim to be the hardest worker in the room. I Exercise my strengths and practice my weaknesses and be kind to those around me. Include a smile and positive attitude and I know I will be successful and get to where I want to be. In terms of nutrition, being that little bit stricter during the week – hitting my protein target, sufficient calories, water etc. – will contribute to how much I can let loose the weekend. Earn the weekend is what I say. Exercise and sleep is a must during the week. Minimum 1 hour in the gym and 8 hours sleep a day is important to me. Outside of that it’s just a case of getting as many steps and activities in throughout the day as possible. Training is a priority, I don’t mind sacrificing parts of the weekend if I feel I haven’t done enough during the week. That typically leaves plenty time to rest and unwind. Not a lot of time, but enough to let the mind wander away from work and just chill the f**k out..! Weekends – Free Roam If I feel I’ve worked hard enough during the week – both at work and in the gym – the weekend is the time to let loose. I still aim to get a workout or two in as it’s one of, if not my favourite hobby, but I’d make sure I get a little extra sleep in too. My meals during the week would be quite specific and consistent, most of the time prepped on a Sunday evening to make sure I get what I need daily to coincide with my training and calorie goals. The weekend, I like to veer away from my typical meals and explore a bit. I don’t worry about the calories per say as I know I’ll work it off next week. I like foods that are protein dense so they are always of some benefit but I wouldn’t panic about what else is on the plate. Lastly, I try avoid spending time on work at the weekends. Sunday afternoon/evening I would always spend some time preparing for the week ahead because I like to be organised but other than that, the weekend is for the soul – exercise, friends, family, food, hobbies, pints. The lot. Tips Keep an eye on daily step counts/ calorie burn. You don’t necessarily have to track them but it helps to have an idea of your activity. Invest in a fitness tracker of some sort to help you out. Key note here is to focus more on calorie intake than calorie expenditure. List your priorities – exercise, food, sleep, work etc. – and plan your day around them. If you keep these regular, they should come second nature to you and your days will feel more structured. Spend time exploring different meals, workouts and other ways to progress. Make a list of varieties to keep your days interesting. Don’t let your routine become tedious, there’s a fine line between consistency and repetitiveness. Ask for help and advice. Even if you don’t need it, there’s always something new to learn. Everyone has their own opinions and perspectives, keep an open mind and don’t be shy to try something new. Conclusion I’m nearly done. That’s ‘The balanced life’ from my perspective. I work hard enough during the week to improve myself physically, mentally and professionally and I let loose enough on the weekends to enjoy life. Does it always go to plan? Of course not. But the days it goes wrong are fun, they challenge you to adapt and progress in a spontaneous way. Final note: it takes time, but once you find that balance not only can you still achieve your goals but you can actually enjoy yourself at the same time. As a fitness professional and a gym enthusiast, my goal isn’t to have the perfect physique society tells me I should have, but to find that routine where work, fitness and social life coincide to create optimum fulfilment – the balanced life.
