Askeaton Pool & Leisure Marked 10 years in Business
On Sunday 21st of January , exactly ten years to the day from its official opening by then President Mary McAleese , Askeaton Pool & Leisure celebrated its first successful decade in business.
Guest of honour on the day was Minister of State for Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, Patrick O Donovan. Speaking on the day, Minister O’Donovan congratulated Askeaton Pool & Leisure on providing a top quality service across such a wide region and across all sports.
MC for the event, Councillor Keven Sheahan, in his dual Capacity as County Councillor and Chairman of the Board of AP&L, informed the gathered crowd of the impressive usage rates of the centre. Over 1000 school children a week from over 40 schools use the pool for their swimming lessons throughout the whole year. Along with customers coming from as far afield as North Kerry to avail of the services offered in the centre, he stated that Askeaton Pool & Leisure was now a regional centre not just a local one.
As the 49% shareholder in AP&L, Askeaton Swimming Club were represented on the day by Mary O Donaghue. Mary reminded everyone of the commitment and dedication shown by Askeaton Swimming Club in fundraising and campaigning to get such a first class facility developed in such a small community and she thanked Limerick County Council for their continued and unwavering support for the centre. She also thanked Coral Leisure for their management of the centre which under their stewardship, is now an Ireland Active Gold Standard White Flag facility, employing over 30 local staff .
In summing up, Councillor Sheahan promised that Limerick County Council would continue to seek financial support for the development and extension of Askeaton Pool & Leisure centre from central government to ensure the continued success of Askeaton pool & leisure into the next decade and beyond
Declan Nash, the Centre Manager, said that Askeaton Pool & Leisure prided itself on integrating itself into the fabric of the community, providing up to 30 jobs for the local community and giving their business to local businesses. He also thanked the loyal customers, many of whom have been members for the whole 10 years for their continued custom, he also thanked Askeaton Swimming Club for their support and he thanked all the local schools who use the facility every year.
